How to Reduce Car Loan Interest
📖 4 min read
Car loan interest rates in India typically range from 8.5% to 14% p.a. A difference of even 1% can mean saving ₹20,000–₹40,000 on a typical car loan. Here's how to get the best rate.
1. Improve Your Credit Score
A CIBIL score above 750 qualifies you for the lowest rates most banks offer. Check your credit report for errors and clear any outstanding debts before applying.
2. Make a Larger Down Payment
A smaller loan amount signals lower risk to the bank. Many banks offer slightly better rates on loans below a certain LTV (Loan-to-Value) ratio.
3. Compare Multiple Lenders
Don't accept the first offer. Get quotes from at least 3–4 banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak) and NBFCs. A 0.5% difference in rate on ₹10 lakh for 5 years saves ₹14,000.
4. Choose a Shorter Tenure
Although this increases monthly EMI, the total interest paid drops significantly. Run the numbers with CarHaven's calculator to find the optimal balance.
5. Make Prepayments
Most banks allow prepayments with minimal penalties. Even one additional EMI per year can reduce your interest significantly — especially in the first 2 years of the loan.
